Where Is The Water? – Anna Browne

It’s been so long since the rain last fell
Our dam is nothing but an empty shell
Old wattle’s life is shorter
It’s roots can’t reach the water
Perhaps it will die, only time can tell

The wood ducks no longer come here to nest
They stay near the river for that is best
It’s feeling like so long
Since I heard that song
Pitter-patter of the rain while I rest

Author’s note:

This is a place on the far south coast of New South Wales. It is usually very luscious and full of wildlife, but we are currently suffering from drought and I’m writing about the loss of our dam which is a source of water and food for native wildlife.
