The Burnt Stars – Meher Datta

Every night I see ghosts.
Over the black water of the ocean
And it’s vast emptiness,
And over the tops of the buildings
with the lush of trees, they sparkle.

Here’s a fun fact:
It takes 1.3 seconds for the light of the moon to reach earth.
So we are seeing the moon as it was
1.3 seconds in the past.
Some stars are so far away
From our marble of a planet
That they have long since burned and died
In a soundless explosion of light and elements.

So by the time we see the starlight, some stars are long dead.
And we are seeing their ghosts in the night sky.

But now, as I look over the black water of the ocean
And it’s vast emptiness,
Over the tops of the buildings
With the lush of trees
There is a blanket over the empty light
Of dead stars.
A shroud of thick smoke and exhaust
