1. newcastle station

the flyer is all steamed up

& waiting

for the dash to sydney

a figure – male

hurries across

the level crossing

in front of the platform

his hat sitting a little

too forward on his head

is the barrier coming down?

it’s hard to tell

from this angle

& after all these years.

2. northern breakwater

there are four of you

in the newspaper cutting

from the late 1950’s.

the caption lists your names

& states the reason for the picture.

– the opening of an extension

to the northern breakwater.

while the others are looking down

at the rocks or the photographer’s lens

you alone are looking above

his head & out to sea

searching perhaps

for your boat about to come in.
