Panthers – Gregory Horne

The manifestation of a need:
a mystery in the hills,
something wild and exotic,
sleek, but quixotic –
wild panther.

Conceived of alliterated seed –
a pee for a pee,
ejaculated from the mouth
of a footballer’s wife –
“Panthers!”

The darkest flanks of evenings bleed
between streetlights,
between houses, in the carpark
of the world –
Panthers.

The beasts have always sought the deed
on quiet nights in cul de sacs,
sniffing out the musky dark;
eating childhood for a lark –
panthers.
