In The Autumn Sea – Patricia Jones

Green diamond fist
   Shattered blue glass sea
Explodes over me
I let go
Sea gulls huddle tiny grey nuns
    On ochre rocks
Rise up screeching
   Sea chant litany.
A child’s plaintive cry
‘ Mummy mummy,
If the tide goes out
Will it always come back in again?’
      ‘The tide always goes out
and comes back in again’
Child hums lights votive to memory
’ Always come back in again,
Always comes back in again”
   Turns a perfect Catherine wheel
Sun’s silk fingers on my shoulders
A wave ripples
         shells spill at my feet.
