DMZ Peace Zombies: A Prayer – Dennis Garvey

Let’s go, body and soul

With no way of return

-Ko Un: Arrows-

Let the DMZ peace zombies awake and fly free

Let its dead zone arise, setting its occupants free

Let it detonate its silence, explode with the noise

Of a billion sounds forming healing syllables for all

All firing off millions of stories, thousands of verses

From that buffer zone of black nothingness

From that buffer zone of black nothingness

Let the peace zombies shine, lighting the way

Let their peace path be both clear and bright

For those trapped and imprisoned inhabitants

From a happy time long before the 70 year war

For they wish to live with you again, uniting us

Through depths of black nothingness

Through depths of black nothingness

DMZ peace zombies bring symbols of happy times

Symbols of the twelve centuries of Korean peace

Symbols of all we love and care about in this world

The white naped crane and the red crowned crane

Singing wishes of peace, long life and good luck

From that black space where the dream died

From that black space where the dream died

Will emerge animals and plants and birds lost to our world

Animals and plants and birds finding sanctuary in blackness

Peace zombies hidden by modern war torn ways

Such as the Asiatic black bear, unseen by dark surveillance

Bright eyes shining, invisible to dividing ideologies

Visibly staring from invisible blind spots

Visibly staring from invisible blind spots

That help to conserve and protect the imaginary 38th parallel

Where peace zombies sleep, waiting to wake and rise up

See the forms they take as they wait to wake war’s fault lines

Siberian tiger, Chinese water deer, yellow marten and Amur coral

Peace zombies all, ready to transport lost peace back to you

Through that black nothingness of war

Through that black nothingness of war

Let all the inhabitants of those twelve centuries of peace

Let all people, birds, plants, animals, insects, cells and organisms

Dance across that dead zone, following the DMZ peace zombies

Taking up residence in our houses, buildings, hearts and minds

Living among us again, celebrating life and lives lived in peace
