Disappearing Grass – Maryanne Smith

Green grass in springtime

Bright shades of mint and lime

Spreading and thriving

Ice-sprinkled and twinkling

A carpet for soccer balls and bare feet

Soft and spongy, think and deep

Emerging shoots struggling forth

Melted emeralds covering the earth

Come the summer days

Turning brown, becoming beige

Crinkly, crackly, spiky, hard

Dust and dirt in a dry backyard

Disappeared ….. for now
