Limping along Castlereagh Street
After drinking in the city all day,
Turning vowels over in my mind,
I considered the name that captivated
Poets from Paterson to Slesssor
To James, the name the street
Shared with a suburb, a river,
A town in County Down,
And a viscount who incurred
The wrath of Byron and Shelley.
Weeks later, with the vowels
Still echoing around my brain,
I arrived in Coonabarabran,
A town built on the river
Named Castlereagh.
We ate a picnic lunch beside
The water while our daughter
Climbed and ran in the park
Where I first heard the word
More than three decades ago.
